A message from the Vice President:
Recently, I encountered an individual
who had been at my Department trying to recruit members for his police union.
After his talk, I spoke with him about the differences between our two
organizations. I stated that both organizations were positive for Law
Enforcement and for the protection of it's members but that I personally want
more of a Brotherhood, keyword Fraternal and that I see his
particular organization as a business. The FOP is a Fraternal Order that
conducts business. I stated to him that I have seen many Police Memorials,
and I have yet to see the his particular groups name on any of them, only the
FOP star. He said, "You're right, and you won't see our name on one.
Building a $30,000 memorial won't put a dime in our pockets." I took a long drag
from my cigarette (same effect as counting to 10) and then replied, "That's what your organization is all about then isn't it? Money. Well, the FOP will keep
adding names and keep building memorials, and we may lose a dime doing so, hell,
we may even lose two dimes, but we do it so that we don't forget those who gave
us what we have, we do it to let the public know men and women get killed doing
this job, and if nothing else, we do it out of respect. And hearing what you
just said about your dime just verified to me that I joined the right
Organization." He left after that.
I have always felt, presently feel, and will always feel 10 foot tall and bullet
proof by saying I have the privilege of being a Member of the Fraternal Order of
Police in the State of Alabama.
